At Peter Tonge Consulting, we are passionate about the work we do, but as the old saying goes, we understand the importance of balancing work and play. For me, the play aspect takes the form of wheelchair fencing—a close combat sport where athletes engage in fast and precise bouts while positioned about 1.5 meters apart.
I came to the world of sports relatively late in life, lacking the inherent mind/body connection, coordination, and fine motor skills that many athletes possess. After trying various sports, including basketball (which, humorously, turned out not to be my forte), and realizing that wheelchair rugby, while exhilarating, can be demanding on an older body, I discovered fencing. Its speed, precision, and proximity made it the perfect match for me.
My love for fencing was immediate. It offers a unique blend of strategy and technique. With dedicated coaching from Fencing Manitoba, whose coaches are determined to elevate the province of Manitoba into one of the world’s premier fencing destinations while championing accessibility, the experience is truly elite.
I witness my skills growing week by week. Our fencing sessions are not just a highlight but a priority in my life, providing a blend of friendship, fitness, and stress relief. Spending a few hours focused on sport has proven to be an incredible and fulfilling way to unwind. And let’s be real. I look pretty badass.
If you’re intrigued, we invite you to join us on Monday evenings in Winnipeg at Sport for Life.
