In 2021, Arts AccessAbility Network Manitoba (AANM) launched an important project: an accessibility audit for arts venues, created entirely by the Deaf and disability community. This audit addresses real barriers, from staff training to digital accessibility, and focuses on making arts spaces truly welcoming for everyone. Being a part of this project through Peter Tonge Consulting has been a rewarding experience, as we work closely with AANM to improve accessibility across Manitoba’s arts scene.
This week, Jenel Shaw from AANM and I hit the road to Brandon, Manitoba, for an exciting milestone—completing audits for three local arts venues. It wasn’t just business; it was a great road trip too. We swapped stories and enjoyed the ride all while heading toward the shared goal of supporting accessibility in Brandon’s vibrant arts community. Meeting venue staff, discussing their needs, and seeing firsthand the willingness to create change made the trip both meaningful and fun.
These audits aren’t just about pointing out what’s wrong—they’re about collaboration and growth. We left Brandon feeling confident that the groundwork has been laid for real improvements that will benefit both artists and audiences. It’s exciting to be part of this journey toward greater inclusion and accessibility, one venue at a time.
Completing venue audits was part of the beginning for Peter Tonge Consulting, and it’s a commitment I’m happy to continue as our work expands. Everyone should be able to access the arts!
