National AccessAbility Week, running from May 26 to June 1, 2024, shines a light on the contributions of Canadians with disabilities and the resourceful leaders making our world more accessible and inclusive. This year’s theme, “Forward Together: Accessibility and Inclusion for All,” emphasizes the collective effort needed to create a society where everyone can participate fully.
In honor of this important week, I attended the “Accessible Canada — Accessible World” conference. As a person with a disability, this event was particularly meaningful for me. The conference focused on advancing accessibility and inclusive design across various sectors. It was a reminder of the complex barriers we face and how acknowledging our intersectionality is the way forward.
Key discussions at the conference included:
- Who and What Are We Missing?: Identifying the overlooked accessibility gaps and barriers that still exist.
- Inclusive Decision-Making: Ensuring that people with disabilities are part of the decision-making processes that affect them.
- Innovation in Standards and Policy: Exploring new standards and policies that can drive accessibility forward.
- Accessible and Equitable Communications: Promoting communication methods that are accessible to all, ensuring everyone can receive and share information.
National AccessAbility Week is a time to celebrate progress, but also a reminder of the work still needed. How did you acknowledge the week?
